The technology:
The ASV RC-100 with a Fecon cutting head is powered by a Perkins 4.4 liter, 4-cylinder diesel engine that produces 304 ft-lb of torque. The 18" wide rubber tracks only exert 3.5 psi even though the machine weighs in at 14,000 lbs.
Articles supporting mulching:
...."Equipped with a FECON Bull Hog shredder, it processes the logging slash into mulch. The treatment provides several benefits. It eliminates the need for burning and the associated risk of forest fire and nuisance smoke. Converting the logging slash to mulch also speeds the process of the wood fiber decomposing and returning nutrients to the soil." read more...
...."The Rocky Mountain Research Station (USFS) did a study before our work that showed the erosion rate was 4 tons per acre," said Fran Peterson. "After we used the Fecon heads to do the work, the erosion rate went down to a 1/2-ton per acre. They're extremely pleased with the Fecon Bull Hog treatment, and other agencies are looking at using the Fecon for their watersheds." The risk of attracting pine beetles was also diminished by masticating the trees. "When you masticate, it dries out a lot faster and drawing bark beetles is greatly reduced," said Deb Allen-Reid, New Mexico zone leader for forest health in Forest Service Region 3, who was happy with the quick drying time for the mulch. read more...
...."a rubber tracked skid steer ....with Fecon Bullhog masticating head, was used as a single treatment to mulch thinning residues and mow understory shrubs and encroaching undesirable grand fir regeneration. Mowing of bitterbrush and other ..... shrubs has been shown to invigorate and cause resprouting, which improves browse for deer. read more...
...."Due to its dense branching habit, formidable thorns, and hedge-like tendencies, it is difficult to effectively treat multiflora rose. If possible, the best approach is to mow
the plants with an implement such as a FECON Bullhog,
MeriCrusher, or other brush-specific mowing device. This
eliminates the thorny canopy and allows you to treat the much smaller regrowth. read more...
And if you really want to get technical:
...."
Our results suggest that erosion is slight to insignificant following mastication,"
